The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, commonly known as the Immaculate Conception Church, is a historic and iconic landmark located in Panaji, Goa.
The Immaculate Conception Church of Goa is one of Goa’s most iconic Portuguese attractions. Goa is obviously famous for two major things – Beaches & Churches. Built in 1619, this church has a unique zigzag pattern of stairs that seems to dance its way up to the church entrance. The unique European style of this church makes it one of the most popular attractions of Goa.
Today, it’s not just a religious sanctuary but a must-visit spot in many Goa tour packages. What’s fascinating is that the church bells once belonged to the Augustinian Monastery of Our Lady of Grace in Old Goa, which now lies in ruins. These bells are popular for their rich, melodious tone, and have survived a devastating collapse of the original bell tower in 1776. From the gallery of the church, you can get an amazing view of the entire city. The church has also been a silent witness to Goa’s history and has also been a signal or frequent visiting place for Portuguese sailors returning from their voyages.
