Overview of Barren Island:

Barren Island is the only confirmed active volcano in the Indian subcontinent. It is a gem in popular Andaman Tour Packages and is the natural, raw and untamed beauty of this place. This mysterious island, located in the Andaman archipelago, has been a magnet to scientists and adventurers since its first recorded eruption in 1787. The volcano has been consistently active since 1991, making it a spectacular sight with its occasional steam and smoke displays.

What makes Barren Island truly fascinating is that it sits at the junction of the Indian and Burmese tectonic plates. Local fishermen tell tales of nights when the dark waters around the island reflect an orange glow from volcanic activity. Marine biologists have also discovered that the volcanic nutrients have created an extraordinarily rich underwater ecosystem, making the surrounding waters a paradise for diverse coral species.

What are the Key Highlights of Barren Island:

  • Volcanic Marvel: Witness the active volcano, with its perfect conical shape rising 354 meters above sea level, surrounded by crystalline waters and black sandy beaches.
  • Marine Ecosystem: Dive into the waters and explore its marine life, where volcanic minerals create perfect conditions for coral growth and attract species like manta rays, dugongs, and schools of barracuda.
  • Geological Time Machine: Explore the layers of solidified lava flows, with some rocks dating back over 1.8 million years, offering glimpses into Earth’s volcanic history.
  • Wildlife Encounters: Spot unique species adapted to this harsh environment, including feral goats and sea eagles.
  • Photography: Capture stunning contrasts between the stark volcanic landscape and the green waters, especially during sunrise when the morning lights the surroundings.
