Overview of Sigiriya:

Sigiriya, the “Lion Rock,” is one of Sri Lanka’s most amazing sights. This massive rock fortress rises 200 meters straight up from the ground and has a really interesting story behind it. Back in the 5th century, King Kashyapa built his palace on top of this rock after taking the throne from his father – he actually walled his father alive! He was scared his brother would come back for revenge, so he created this incredible fortress with gardens, pools, and beautiful frescoes. According to mythology, it is also believed to be where King Ravana’s palace, known as Alakamandawa, once stood.

Most tourists who come to Sri Lanka make sure to include Sigiriya in their travel plans, and it’s easy to see why. Almost all the best Sri Lanka Tour Packages feature this UNESCO World Heritage site as a must-visit spot. The entrance to the fortress is through a massive lion’s mouth – well, at least it used to be. Today, only the giant paws remain, but they’re still super impressive. The ancient water gardens are actually still working after 1,500 years, and those mirror walls with ancient graffiti give us a peek into what people thought about this place centuries ago.
