Chandratal Lake: The Moon Lake of the Himalayas
Located in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, Chandratal Lake, or “Moon Lake,” is a magical place, and is always included in the Spiti – Manali tour package. Situated at an altitude of 4,300 meters, the lake was historically a rest stop for traders and shepherds of the people who lived here.
There’s also a mythological story related to it—It is believed that Chandratal is the place where Lord Indra’s chariot arrived to carry Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava, to heaven after the battle of Kurukshetra. The lake is surrounded by tall mountains with snow all over it, so no doubt that the views you get are definitely going to be awesome. It’s no wonder that Chandratal Lake is a favourite destination of this package. One other reason why this place is famous is because of the camping and stargazing experience, amazing for astrophotography.
Chandratal Lake is open to visitors from May to early October, depending on weather conditions. After that, because of heavy snowfall in the region, entry to Chandratal is restricted. Entry to the lake is absolutely free, but charges may apply for camping. If included in a Himachal Tour package, guided trips often cover travel arrangements and other costs as well.
